What is coppicing?
….. Coppicing involves cutting trees down to ground
level which stimulates them to re-grow producing useful
materials for traditional crafts such as hurdle making. Once
the hazel has re-grown over a number of years it is
re-coppiced and the cycle continues thereby greatly
increasing their natural life span.
Why plant new hazel trees? …..
Many of our coppices have been neglected for decades
resulting in the death and decline of many hazel trees due
to old age and competition from too many larger trees. It
is an essential part of the restoration and conservation of
these woodlands to replace these lost trees.
What about wildlife? …..
The traditional cycle of coppicing is responsible for many
of the beloved flora and fauna that we associate with
woodlands. Many wildflowers, birds , bats, butterflies and
the endangered dormouse thrive in managed coppice woodlands.
You can help halt the decline of these species by supporting
our work.
How can I
get involved? …..
You already have if you decide to sponsor the planting of
some trees. If you would like to do even more then please
volunteer to help in the coppice restoration work by joining
a volunteer group in the woods and even plant the trees
yourself!
We are dedicated to conserving and restoring hazel coppice
woodlands in Worcestershire. Thankyou for helping us.
